Social media for actors

Social Media for actors

I often get lots of actors asking me whether they should use social media and whether it’s relevant for actors. Social media for actors is a very good idea when used appropriately and there is a specific, desired outcome, otherwise it can end up sapping lots of time for very little results.

Social media has been a game-changer for businesses all over the world – instant connection, it’s free to use and is a great marketing tool to build relationships. As an actor you are a business, but before you start sharing with Nina Gold what you had for tea, let’s dig in and find out how you can use social media as part of your marketing strategy whilst you build up your acting career.

KNOW WHO YOU ARE TARGETING

You might ask why. It is critical you know who you are targeting so you can tailor all of your content to these people. Look at Leonardo DiCaprio for instance, he has masses of followers on Instagram, Facebook & Twitter. He is targeting his fans, which he has millions of, but not with his acting, he has a very specific, desired outcome in mind, which we’ll come to later.

UPDATE IT REGULARLY

A social media profile that isn’t updated often isn’t appealing; it doesn’t show someone who is pro-active. And with the big social media platforms constantly changing their algorithms it makes it much more difficult for you to reach your target audience when you’re only updating once in a blue moon.

KEEP IT HIGH QUALITY

Whether it’s pictures, footage or promo for your latest show/movie, make sure the content is high quality, to reflect your brand (yep you are a brand whether you realise it or not). Imagine if you walked into a BMW showroom and the latest model you were about to test drive had scratches in the paint work, tatty interior and a big crack in the windscreen, it would put you off. You are representing your brand, so everything you put on social media is a refection of that. High quality content looks professional and places value on your work. Student footage can be very hit and miss for the quality, so use your own discretion.

SHOW YOUR PERSONALITY

Businesses are built upon the know, like & trust factor. Aim to build a relationship with your target audience within boundaries. If your target audience is agents and casting directors you don’t want to be saying how you’ve called in sick to work because you were too hungover, or tagging the Hubbards in every tweet or update – that’s a no brainer! However you do want to show your personality so your target audience can see you are pleasant and easy to work with (as well a talented).

HAVE A DESIRED OUTCOME

There’s no point in wasting hours of time on social media if you don’t know why you’re using it. Let’s go back to Leonardo DiCaprio’s social media. Leo has a very specific, desired outcome. He is using his social media to highlight, among other things, the effects of global warming and asking his fans to take action with the petitions, pictures, videos he shares. What will your specific, desired outcome be?
