I want to act but I’m staying in my day job!

Many of us dream of becoming an actor…

and yet many of us never pursue our dream. Or we do for a while then give up. We give up for TONS of reasons, any of these sound familiar?

I’m not getting anywhere, the auditions have dried up,it’s a waste of time trying, there’s no guarantee, I’ve got to pay the bills, I need to keep a roof over my head, I need to put food on the table, the car insurance is due this month, Christmas is coming, it’s a tough industry anyway, better to earn money in a job I hate than struggle. Bla, bla, bla…

DAMN RIGHT YOU NEED TO EARN A LIVING!!
– THOSE THINGS WON’T PAY FOR THEMSELVES –
But you don’t need to let life drift by in the same old routines because one day you’re going to wake up and regret it. While you’re so busy earning a living paying for everything, where do your dreams and passions come into this? They DON’T. You know they don’t and I know they don’t. So we might as well just forget it hey? NO!
YOU CAN MAKE ACTING WORK ROUND YOUR DAY JOB.
Do you think Brad Pitt just rolled up in Hollywood one day and was handed a multi million pound contract for a blockbuster by a guy wearing a visa, smoking a cigarette, “kid you’re name’s Brad Pitt, you’re gonna be a star” Erm no. He did go to Hollywood but HE DRESSED AS A CHICKEN to pay his way. Crazy hey?
  • Whoopi Goldberg was a MORGUE BEAUTICIAN
  • Hugh Jackman was a PE Teacher and a party clown
  • Johnny Depp sold ball point pens
  • Rachel McAdams worked at McDonaldsfor three years
and YES they all had bills to pay, but they also had a dream to pursue.
Here’s how to make it work:-
  1. Use holiday days for auditions,
  2. Pull a sicky to get to an audition, controversial I know!
  3. Do agency work – it’s much easier to grab a day off here and there when an audition comes up.
  4. Bank work is also great for taking time off to film or go to auditions.
  5. Find someone to cover your shift and return the favour when they need it.
  6. Ask for a day off unpaid to go to an audition.
  7. If you land the role use holiday days or take time off unpaid.
We all dread asking our boss for time off but who’s life are you living? Yours or your bosses?
